In May 2025, the United Nations commemorated a historic cultural milestone with the first official celebration of World Football Day, observed on 25 May following its proclamation by the General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/78/281 in 2024.
The observance recognizes football’s unique role as a universal language—one capable of transcending borders, cultures, and generations while promoting peace, diplomacy, inclusion, and shared human experience.
To mark the occasion, a remarkable object was presented: a handcrafted crystal football sphere, created as both an artistic tribute and a symbol of the sport’s enduring global resonance.
The Football Reimagined in Crystal
At first glance, the sculpture recalls the familiar geometry of a traditional match ball. Yet rendered in high-clarity crystal, the form transforms into something altogether different—an object that exists between sporting icon and sculptural art.
Meticulously shaped and polished, the sphere captures light with exceptional clarity. Its precisely defined panels and flawless curvature speak to a level of craftsmanship that demands patience, technical mastery, and a deep understanding of glass as both material and medium.
Substantial in weight and presence, the crystal football was placed at the podium during the ceremony in the United Nations General Assembly Hall, where it served as a luminous focal point during discussions on football’s power to unite communities and inspire progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.

Beyond the ceremony itself, the sculpture has been given a lasting presence within the United Nations headquarters.

The Origins of the Sphere
The project traces back to the vision of Lasphera founder and lead designer David Armani, whose lifelong relationship with sport shaped the philosophy behind the work.
A former college basketball player with a growing fascination for glass artistry, Armani became increasingly aware of how essential sport is to young people’s development—particularly during periods when opportunities for play and social interaction became limited.
“Sport teaches resilience, cooperation, and the ability to connect with others in real time,” Armani reflects. “We wanted to create something that celebrates those values while also supporting their continuation.”
To realize the concept, Lasphera partnered with one of Europe’s most respected glassmaking studios. Together with a team of master glassblowers, the collaborators explored the possibilities of high-clarity, lead-free crystal.
The result is a series of perfectly balanced spheres—each one handcrafted, individually finished, and subtly unique.
Certain editions feature delicate internal bubbles or faint tonal variations within the crystal, evoking the suggestion of motion—an echo of a ball suspended momentarily in flight.
Craftsmanship with Purpose
